Luncheon Given for New Chapter of 1812 Society
Society formed June 18, 1923
One of the most interesting social gatherings of the week was the luncheon given by Mrs. Kate Candee Knickerbocker at Krebs in Skaeateles on Monday when the first regular meeting of the newly formed chapter of the New York United States Daughters of 1812 took place several months ago. Mrs. Knickerbocker was chosen by the national society as an organizer for the new chapter. The required numbers of eligible women have been admitted and June 18th the anniversary of the declaration of the War of 1812 was selected as a suitable date for the opening meeting. The new chapter will be named Onondaga and no other chapter can be formed in this county.
The luncheon was a charmingly arranged for the occasion with white flowers and red, white and blue ribbons draped and arranged in bows. At the end of the table were markers one June 18, 1812 and the other June 18, 1921 in brilliant lettering. Appropriate cards marked the places and charming little ivory letter openers were the favors.
Mrs. Kinkcerbocker who is the regent of the new chapter extended her hospitality to the other officers including first vice regent Mrs. Charles A Lux, second vice regent Mrs. Smith Mott Bostick, third vice regent, Mrs. Orlo D Burhans; corresponding secretary Miss Dora M Townsend; recording secretary, Miss Ruth Burhans; treasurer Miss May Hammenken and registrar Mrs. Caleb Candee Brown.
Following the luncheon Miss Dora Townsend gave an interesting talk on the conditions, which led to the War of 1812 and suggested a course of study in American History for the new organization. The war was a short one and only 4,259 women in the United States are members of the Daughters of 1812 of which number 472 have been added in the past year. Meetings of the Onondaga chapter will be monthly and a luncheon or a dinner will follow each. Mrs. William Gerry Slade of New York is the national President.
